Adjacent to the birthing center, University Hospital features the area’s first and most experienced Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), recognized across the country for its excellence in caring for high-risk newborns.

Our 24-hour NICU is dedicated to integrating the lives of parents and their babies right from the start, and encourages parents to visit, feed and cuddle their child as often as possible. The NICU is staffed by neonatologists and is equipped to provide care for even the most critical babies.

Over the years, research has contributed to improving the technology of caring for premature babies.  In the NICU our practice has responded to this research so we can continue to provide the best and safest care for your infant.  Studies prove a child’s family is the most important, stable factor in their fragile life.

Studies from Neurobehavioral Infant and Child Studies Group at Harvard University School of Medicine and Children’s Hospital, Boston suggest when a family-centered approach is used in the care of the premature baby; “infants in newborn intensive care units have been shown to spend fewer days receiving ventilator support and oxygen, nipple feed more quickly, and gain weight more rapidly.  They are also discharged sooner.  Family-centered care means using an individualized developmental plan of care and involving parents very early in care and decision-making.
