Transfer and Physician Referral Center (TPRC)

What is the Transfer and Physician Referral Center (TPRC)?

As a Level I Trauma Center and teaching institution, University Hospital works with many referring hospitals and physicians to admit and transfer patients requiring tertiary care. The hospital receives many requests for consultation with our specialized physicians. To make these services easily accessible to referring physicians and hospitals, University Hospital established the Transfer and Physician Referral Center (TPRC).

As a unit within the Admitting Department, the TPRC streamlines admissions and transfers into University Hospital by arranging air or ground transportation and entering insurance, demographic and medical record information prior to patient arrival. It has an established escalation policy to ensure all transfers and referrals are handled appropriately and efficiently.

The TPRC is capable of reducing transfer times by as much as half and enables your patients to receive the tertiary care they need as quickly as possible.

The TPRC also facilitates direct communication between referring physicians and our specialists, giving you more time for patient care.

In order to provide the most efficient patient transfers into University Hospital, all transfers of stabilized patients (including newborns) from other facilities must be coordinated through the TPRC.

How do I access the Transfer and Physician Referral Center? top of page

The TPRC is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week by calling 513-584-BEDS (2337). The Transfer and Physician Referral Center will connect referring physicians and hospitals by coordinating communication with the appropriate University Hospital specialist via teleconferencing. A representative will remain on the line during communication with all parties to provide assistance.

What information should I provide to the Transfer and Physician Referral Center? top of page

You will need to provide your name, your phone or pager number, the patient’s name, date of birth, gender, insurance information, the diagnosis and type of transport needed. You will also need to identify the medical specialty into which you wish to admit or transfer. This will allow the TPRC to rapidly contact the appropriate University Hospital physician for acceptance of the patient, obtain the required demographic and financial data and provide confirmation of an appropriate, available bed.

What if I only need a consultation with a University Hospital physician? top of page

Because of the high level of specialization of our medical staff, physicians often request consultations with University Hospital specialists. Please call the Transfer and Physician Referral Center, 513-584-BEDS (2337), and identify the specialty with which you wish to consult.
