Mission Statement
The Rehabilitation Services Department at University Hospital is committed to providing high quality compassionate care to all of our patients. Our goal in the hospital is to initiate the recovery process to enable patients to return to their highest level of mobility and function as possible.
About Us

As part of University Hospital's level I trauma center and in cooperation with the University of Cincinnati Neuroscience Institute, our department's physical therapists, occupational therapists and speech language pathologists specialize in the treatment of critically ill or injured patients and provide care as needed to all units within the hospital. Rehabilitation Services has been providing quality patient care to those within the hospital for over thirty years. Many of our therapists hold advanced degrees and / or nationally recognized certifications. As a teaching hospital, we strive to provide excellent care through continued commitment to our patients and to research.
Services in the Hospital

Physical Therapy
Evaluates and provides treatments focusing on the performance and safety of mobility and movement. The need for an assistive device (walker, wheelchair, crutches or cane) is determined and taught to each patient as necessary. Physical therapists also develop exercise programs to maximize patients’ range of motion, as well as reducing fall risks and improving balance for safe mobility at home and within the community.
Occupational Therapy
Evaluates and provides treatments focusing on Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) such as dressing, bathing, feeding and grooming. Occupational therapists make recommendations regarding the need for adaptive equipment such as bedside commodes, shower seats, and reachers. Assessments are also performed to evaluate each patient’s cognition and safety awareness in regards to information comprehension, reasoning skills and judgment to safely perform daily living tasks. In addition, occupational therapists also evaluate upper extremity function and may provide splints to maximize function and positioning.
Speech Language Pathology
Evaluates and provides treatment that focuses on speech, language, swallowing and cognition. Speech pathologists also determine the patient’s ability to safely eat and drink enough to support their nutritional needs. This may involve an x-ray swallow study or a fiber-optic study done at the bedside. These studies help determine the need for special diet textures or the need for a feeding tube.
