Measures of Mortality

The Health Alliance uses APR-DRG's to benchmark mortality results. All Patient Refined Diagnosis Related Group (APR-DRG) is a methodology to classify patients into clinically meaningful groups that allows data to be adjusted according to severity of illness or risk of mortality.

* Actual Mortality Rate The total number of deaths for a given diagnosis or procedure divided by the total number of cases in the diagnosis or procedure.
'+ Risk-Adjusted Expected Mortality Rate In calculating the expected number of deaths, our database - Midas+ CPMS (*+*+) calculates the percentage from the total number of cases and the actual number of deaths for the entire compartive pool for each diagnosis or procedure. This number is used to calculate what the individual hospital might expect in each diagnosis or procedure.
** Ratio - Actual/Expected The mortality ratio is the actual mortality rate divided by the expected mortality ratio to compare how we are performing compared to the large compartive pool. Ratios less than 1.0 mean less mortality than expected. Ratios greater than 1.0 mean more mortality than expected.
'+++ Risk-Adjusted Expected Mortality Rates - Most Recent Quarter Comparative data for this period is not available until the next quarter from MIDAS+™ Comparative Performance Measurement System (CPMS).
*+*+ MIDAS+™ Comparative Performance Measurement System (CPMS) The MIDAS+™ Comparative Performance Measurement System (CPMS) provides our facility with outcome measures and process measures that are used to trend our hospitals' performance over time and benchmark performance to other hospitals nationwide.
*+ Acute care inpatients Uses only the discharged inpatients with a medical or surgical classification, excluding obstetrics, newborns, behavioral health and rehabilitation patients

Using the tables as a guide for these five areas, you can see our progress year to year and quarter to quarter.
